History of Leons
Started as a taxi business by Leon Douglas in 1951, the firm soon adopted Leons as its trading name. Progressing to a Ford Transit 12-seat Deansgate conversion in 1971. Five years later Leons bought Halls Coaches, acquiring four vehicles that included two Ford coaches, which marked the transition from minibus operator to coach operator.
Around the start of the 1980s Leons was buying its first new coaches - a Caetano Alpha and one of the first Plaxton Paramounts, both Fords. A switch to heavy-weights and a notable landmark came next when, in 1989, it took a group of holidaymakers to Sweden in a Volvo B10M fitted with 53 seats plus toilet.
By this time the firms coach holiday programme was in its second season and a subsequent takeover took it into the schools tour market under the Dragons banner.
Leon's sons Robert and Andrew took an increasingly active role in the management of the business and become joint MDs. They introduced their son's, Ben, Daniel, and Mark and also Robert's son in law, James to the business who have now taken on the roles as joint MDs.
Although Leons fleet has been slimmed down in recent years in a conscious move to concentrate on the quality end of the market, it currently runs 29 coaches. Among them are 15 'execs' - all of which have Van Hool bodies, including two 12-plate 13.2-metre Altano over-deckers which benefit from leather seats and sunken toilets.
2012 marks a very special milestone for Leons as from April we have a new home (albeit right nextdoor to our old one!). A £3m headquartes in Beaconside, Stafford. Opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Stafford on 22 April, it is the fourth move for Leons in its 61 year history.
The new premises, built on a 4.5 acre brown-field site, comprises of a three-bay workshop area with a VOSA approved MOT testing area with paint booth as well as the main building with two floors of accomodation and grand reception space.
